The system cabling format is ideal and very cost effective for small premises

Alarm sense 2 wire systems

Ideal premises - Guesthouses, hostels and HMO’s

Again these systems are cost effective for small businesses, especially with sleeping accommodation. The detection and sounders are integrated, using one cable for all. Ideal if you require a high quantity of sounders.

Addressable systems

Ideal premises - Multi-storey offices, factories, warehouses, hotels and other large premises

These systems work in a similar way to a computer network, allowing two way information to travel between the alarms components. The alarm allows the user to pinpoint exactly which detector has activated. The system requires significantly less cabling and is fully network compatible, making it infinitely expandable.

Wireless Systems

Ideal premises - Old premises such as listed buildings and hotels

These systems are ideal in premises where cabling cannot be used, a quick installation is required, business interruption must be kept to a minimum or aesthetics are critical.

Fire Alarm Grading Explained

Fire alarms are graded in two main categories.

L & M type - Life protection (normally specified by architects, fire officers or fire risk assessors)
P type - Property protection (normally specified by insurance companies)

P systems are used primarily to protect unoccupied premises and are further split into P1 & P2. They include connection to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) for keyholder and brigade response.

P1 - Detection everywhere
P2 - Detection where required
Typically installed in – Warehouses, data centres, and factories.

L systems are further split into L1, L2, L3, L4, M. The grade of fire alarm is normally determined by the complexity of the building, access to escape routes, use of the premises and the ability of occupants to evacuate quickly. See typical grading below.

M - Call Points
Typically installed in – Open plan single storey offices and commercial premises

L1 - Call Points and fire detection everywhere
Typically installed in – Nursing homes and large multi storey buildings

L2 - Call points and fire detection on fire exit routes, rooms directly off fire routes, plant rooms and electrical cupboards.
Typically installed in – Hotels, HMO’s and large multi storey buidings

L3 - Call points and fire detection on fire exit routes and rooms directly off fire routes
Typically installed in – Large convoluted buildings with a small number of Fire exits

L4 - Call points and fire detection on fire exit routes
Typically installed in – two storey small offices and commercial premises

Fire Alarm Indicating Equipment.

Sounder levels must be a minimum of 65 decibels within the premises and 75 decibels in a bedroom. Disabled toilets and very noisy environments also require a flashing light. As fire doors absorb around 20db, sleeping accommodation normally require a sounder in each bedroom.

The notes above are only a guide and should not be taken literally. Fire system should only Categorising by qualified and experienced Fire engineers or fire risk assessors.
